Major John Hinton and his wife Pherebee were early settlers in Wake County. Major Hinton served in the Wake County Colonial Militia in Richard Caswell’s army at the Battle of Moore’s Creek. He was a Free Mason, Lodge No. 21 in Raleigh. John and Pherebee were buried in a family cemetery located at the Clay-Hill-on-the-Neuse, and just recently this land was transferred to a developer. The Wake County Commissioners approved a plan to reconstruct the graveyard wall and relocated the Hinton graves to the Historic Oakwood Cemetery. This photo gallery represents the official re-internment of the Hinton family graves.
