The Battle of Hanging Rock
SCAR Corps of Discovery - March 10th, 2007When I first conveyed to Charles Baxley I'd like to attend the Hanging Rock Corps of Discovery expedition, he wrote "Bring your digital eyes." Charles and I have collaborated before, most notably at the "Nathanael Greene Symposium" in Eutawville, SC, so I am no stranger to the wonderful programs sponsored by SCAR. This last trip to Hanging Rock was no exception ..... we learned of William R. Davie's successful raid on Bryan's Camp, and then, days laters, of Thomas Sumter's bloody, 3 hour battle at the Prince of Wales regimental campground. Fully 80 participants listened intently as a corp group of historians related different facets of the same story - a desperate fight for freedom in the backcountry of South Carolina. These pictures recorded the place, the people and the event, ending on the very slopes of Hanging Rock itself.
