John D. Sinks, VPG Mid-Atlantic District, NSSAR, spoke of the heroic efforts of a rear guard of Maryland and Delaware Continental Infantry under Col. Otho Williams, Continental Cavalry under Lt. Col. William Washington, and some Virginia militia riflemen under Maj. David Campbell to skillfully shield Greene´s main army and slow the British pursuit. The North Carolina militia skillfully guarded the fords and made certain that boats were on the correct side of the rivers, 226th Anniversary of the Crossing of the Dan, Constitution Square, South Boston, VA., February 10th, 2007
